When is the Best Time to Eat?
We have already discussed the importance of eating if we want to build and grow our muscles. The question we would like to think about is when is the best time to eat?
The best time to eat is during times when our body would optimally be able to absorb these nutrients. This is usually during, immediately and long after workout activities.
We are going to examine each of the times food is optimally absorbed by the body.
Food consumption outside these hours is not a good advice since the body would not able to absorb nutrients effectively and as such will store them as fat.
During workout activities.
We should take whey protein with amounts of dextrose and/or maltodextrin to speed up muscle recovery. The faster the muscles recover the more workouts we are able to do. Consume around 20 grams of protein and 20 to 50 grams of combined carbohydrates. This means that drinking water only is not the best practice to do as we have all learned and made to believe long time ago.1
Long After Workout Hours
This is a time that the body normalizes already. Consume solid proteins and lots of solid, low-glycemic-index, low-insulin-index carbohydrates to keep insulin levels stable. How long should that be after the workout? This is a case to case basis depending on the bodys reaction. This should be just enough time to get to two complete meals. Points to remember are to keep the fat low during this meal. This should just be enough to serve as a delay to gastric emptying and high insulin levels increase fatty acid transport.
This is also the time you may be looking to increase your calorie intake.
Post-workout Period
This period covers around 120 minutes right after workout. This is the time that we would want to repair damaged muscle protein. It is best to drink whey protein to quickly repair our muscles. The time right after workout is also the best time to put in extra calories for us to gain weight.
There we have discussed the time best for food intake. Outside these hours it is better to keep the carbohydrates down with ample amount of protein. Remember you do not need carbohydrates. Take them during the above periods and outside of them maintain a protein based food intake.
