Carbohydrates in Nutrition
It is highly important that we are able to understand the kinds of food we take to keep us fit and strong. Today’s lesson deals with Carbohydrates.
Let us begin with the basic understanding of carbohydrates.
What are the basic forms of carbohydrates?
Complex: This has around hundreds or thousands of sugar units linked together in single molecules. Example of this is potatoe.
Complex carbs are divided into two groups namely: high fiber and low fiber.High fiber complex carbs are difficult to digest such as grass because of our lack of enzymes to accomplish this. However high fiber carbs contain a digestible component called cellulose. Eating high fiber and high-cellulose vegetable foods such as lettuce and broccoli are the healthiest food we could take.
Low fiber on the other hand are bananas, tomatoes, squash and all cereals, grains, potatoes and rice.
Simple: This has around one to three units of sugar linked together in single molecule. This has a sweet taste.
Carbohydrates being a staple meal for most of us are not necessary. There are no known essential carbohydrates as opposed to essential fatty acids and essential amino acids.
However excessive carbohydrate intake causes vascular diseases and is stored as fat resulting in obesity. This may also lead to atherosclerosis and heart disease.
Now we have a basic understanding of what carbohydrates are. This means that to get in shape we should always remember that carbohydrates play a key role in our goal.
